Meat Sampling Size Calculator
How many samples do you need to be confident a lot is clean? Enter the lot size, the lowest prevalence you want to detect and your confidence level.
Estimates only, for planning and comparison. Actual prices vary by store, week and availability.
How the sample size is calculated
For large lots we use the standard detection formula n = ln(1 − confidence) ÷ ln(1 − prevalence). For a known, smaller lot we use the hypergeometric approximation (Cannon & Roe), which needs fewer samples.
If every sample tests negative, you can be that confident the true prevalence in the lot is below the level you entered. Pooling samples can lower lab costs but reduces sensitivity: ask your lab.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many samples do I need to detect 5% contamination?
With 95% confidence and a large lot, 59 samples. With 90% confidence, 45 samples.
Does a smaller lot need fewer samples?
Yes. For a lot of 100 animals and 5% prevalence at 95% confidence you need about 45 samples instead of 59.
